Tawa Bakery, Abu Dhabi’s first gluten-free bakery has opened at Al Muneera, Al Raha Beach.
Emirati founder Reem Al Shemari, was diagnosed with celiac disease last year and wanted to create a concept that demonstrates how gluten-free food can be tasty.
Al Shemari commented: “Gluten-free food is very misunderstood. I love food and don’t believe a single calorie should be wasted, so even after being diagnosed with celiac disease I wasn’t going to sacrifice taste.
“I started cooking gluten-free food and my friends thought it was so delicious they couldn’t believe it was gluten free. With the lack of gluten free options in the UAE I thought ‘let’s change the perception that people have and give them a real taste of delicious gluten free food, while at the same time providing those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance a place they can confidently order anything from the menu’.”
Items on the menu include freshly baked bread, gourmet pizzas, traditional Arabic dishes, such as Manaeesh, burgers and gourmet sandwiches such as the signature Tuna Melt sandwich,
The all-day breakfast menu includes French toast, Emirati eggs with tomato, and home-made granola with Greek yoghurt.
Interiors feature reclaimed tables from Italy, tiles inspired by a Paris antiques shop, a 1900s French oven, wishbone chairs by Hans J Wegner and 111 Navy Chairs made from recycled Coca-Cola bottles.
Tawa Bakery also has a patio, and is open daily from 7.30am to 11pm.
