Hidden amidst the monumental skyline of Riyadh, within the iconic Airline Building, Kimyona presents a new speakeasy concept designed to captivate the senses and transport guests into a world of discovery. Situated in a former Kenzo Tange residential building, once home to bustling travel agencies, Kimyona breathes new life into this historic space with its striking design and immersive experience.
Kimyona’s exceptional design has earned it the prestigious Archello Awards ’24 – Café / Restaurant of the Year, further cementing its status as a remarkable architectural feat in Riyadh. This recognition highlights the innovative and visionary approach behind the space, blending historical significance with cutting-edge design.
Meaning “strange, quaint” in Japanese, Kimyona lives up to its name by offering an interior that leaves a lasting impression. The design is inspired by the process of photo development, with every corner of the space reflecting the transformation from the stark contrast of black and white photography into a spatial experience.
Upon entry, guests are greeted by a photographer’s gallery. This entryway, visible from the exterior, is bathed in bright lighting and neutral tones, creating a zen-like atmosphere that allows the artwork to take center stage. The gallery serves as the gateway to a deeper journey, with a hidden passage within one of the art pieces leading to the main dining hall, offering a sense of wonder and a dramatic shift in ambiance.
The main dining space is designed to resemble a photographer’s darkroom, featuring dark, moody interiors complemented by dimmed lighting. Glass brick glazing envelops the dining room, focusing attention inward while offering an intriguing view from the street level. The obscure translucency of the glass entices curious onlookers with glimpses into the mysterious venue, without fully revealing its secrets.
A central design feature of the dining room is the suspended steel ceiling structure, inspired by hanging photographs in a darkroom. This bold element draws the eye to the bar, creating a focal point that enhances the intimacy and mystery of the space. The walls are clad in reclaimed ceramic Chinese roof tiles, introducing rich textural contrasts against the sleek materials of steel, stone, and ceramics. These elements work harmoniously within a limited color palette of black, white, and red.
Kimyona’s design celebrates the Asian cuisine it serves by blending materials that evoke warmth, coolness, and neutrality. This unique play of contrasts in both design and texture invites guests to embark on an unforgettable sensory experience, making every visit a journey into the unexpected.
