Through continued innovation, improved practices, and a resort-wide passion for driving sustainable luxury, Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort is delighted to share our latest targets and news around sustainability.
Latest Recognition
On 18 June 2022, Hotel & Catering News Middle East awarded Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort the Zero Plastic Initiative of the Year. We are delighted to lead the way in zero plastic for resorts in the Middle East and set the bar for hospitality in this important area.
Significant Improvements
Recycling initiatives throughout the resort have already seen a doubling of recycling percentages month on month in March, April, and May, leading to 42% of all waste being diverted away from landfill in the latest period.
From a position of 6% of waste being recycled in January to a realistic goal of 50% just six months later is a demonstration of the incredible commitment made at all levels of the business and by every Anantara guest.
At approximately 42% each, recyclable glass alongside paper and cardboard are the leading areas of waste reduction. Significant improvements have also been made in metal, plastic, and cooking oil while efforts to improve recycling or reuse of coffee capsules, soaps, toilet paper, and slippers continue to make progress.
Supporting Initiatives in…
…Paper
Incredible progress in March and April saw huge improvements in waste reduction practices leading to real and sustained change. The challenge now is to drive continued progress towards targets in every area. To this end, Anantara is committed to supporting ongoing initiatives in the reduction of paper use at resort and spa check-ins, all training programs, and for in-room messages as well as providing increased recycling bins and cages to encourage team and guest recycling habits throughout the resort.
…Plastic
70kg of plastic was successfully recycled in May and Anantara’s goal is to also reduce the initial use of plastic. 600 single-use plastic bottles have already been removed from the resort gym and replaced with the installation of an on-site water filter as Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort aims to reach its goal of delivering a zero waste health club and zero waste kids club. The provision of Anantara branded reusable flasks for sale is also an ongoing project.
An Anantara policy of offering water at no cost but charging for plastic bottles has been initiated and is already being adopted by other hotels and resorts across Dubai.
…Food waste
Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort has measured 6066 kgs of food waste in May and projects an increased average reduction of 196 kgs per day in the coming months after the installation of a Liquid Food Composter and through summer occupancies.
Over the Holy Month of Ramadan, Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort redistributed 3.6 tonnes of food as part of the 1 Billion Meals initiative which aims to provide food support to the underprivileged and undernourished in 50 countries around the world.
“At Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort we are passionately committed to leading real improvements in sustainable luxury and responsible hospitality, and I am incredibly proud of the achievements already made by every member of our team and supported by each guest who steps through our doors. We understand there are still huge challenges ahead but I am confident we will continue to rise to each of these and help pave the way for improved practices, not just at Anantara but throughout Dubai as a whole ” – Mr James Hewitson – Cluster General Manager for Anantara The Palm Dubai and Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort.
Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort continues to support and drive every initiative to help meet its sustainability targets in June and beyond. The resort is also proud to work in partnership with regional and global initiatives including Dubai Tourism’s 19 Sustainability Requirements, EcoHotels.com, the 1 Billion Meals initiative, Earth Hour, and more.
