Jack Penrod, Owner & Chairman of Nikki Beach Hospitality Group, the global luxury lifestyle company, passed away on Monday, February 3rd, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on June 25, 1939, to Ruth and Chester Penrod in Columbus, Ohio, during the Great Depression, Jack was one of five siblings. From humble beginnings, his journey became a story of remarkable success, resilience, and impact. Penrod spent his life capitalizing on his innate marketing skills to build the legacy of a lifetime. From line cook to owning one of the largest McDonald’s franchises, Penrod found further success as the owner of several bars and restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Daytona. In 1988, he launched Penrod’s Beach Club on South Beach, helping to transform the area from a quiet retirement community into a vibrant resort destination, laying the foundation for what South Beach is known for today. After 25 years transforming Miami Beach, the State of Florida, Miami-Dade County, and the City of Miami Beach officially named April 17, 2012, “Jack Penrod Day” to honor his contributions to the community.
In 1997, tragedy struck when Jack’s daughter, Nicole, passed away in a car accident at just 18 years old. To honor her memory, he founded Nikki Beach in 1998 on the former Penrod’s Beach Club site. Built on a “Celebration of Life” philosophy, Nikki Beach has since grown into a global luxury lifestyle and hospitality brand, synonymous with music, dining, and celebration.
Jack’s life was marked by both profound loss and extraordinary adventure. In 2023, he endured the heartbreaking loss of his grandson, Max, followed by the passing of his second daughter, Tracey, at age 55.
Despite facing immense tragedy, Penrod also embraced a life filled with unparalleled experiences. An avid diver, pilot, and thrill-seeker, he continuously pushed his limits — even surviving in remote wildernesses. His journey was a dynamic fusion of adventure, creativity, and an unwavering devotion to family and friends. Jack’s remarkable story lives on through his autobiography, One Grand Adventure: Becoming Rich in Business, Family and Life, released on May 18, 2023.
His boundless enthusiasm for life and business left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Through his mentorship, generosity, and vision, he touched the lives of countless individuals — friends, colleagues, employees, and guests who were inspired by his passion and kindness. His influence extended far beyond his businesses, shaping communities and creating lifelong connections around the world.
“I shared an extraordinary life with Jack. As a life partner, father, and businessman, he was everything one could ever dream of. Jack was humble, loving, intelligent, and kind — genuine to his core, with an adventurous spirit that was truly magnetic. His children and I loved him deeply, and we will keep his spirit alive through years of cherished memories,” said Jack’s wife and Nikki Beach CEO, Lucia Penrod. “He meant so much to so many, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met. He inspired people to reach for the stars and never give up. It was my deepest privilege to be his wife. We will continue to spread happiness and love for family and friends all over the world and he will live forever in our hearts.”
In 2022, Lucia, who co-founded the company alongside Jack, assumed full responsibility as CEO. Together with a global leadership team based in Miami, Barcelona, Dubai and France, as well as dedicated staff worldwide, the Nikki Beach Hospitality Group family will ensure the continued success and growth of the company.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Lucia, and their children, Jake and Isabella, as well as his children Michele and Michael from his first marriage to Annette Yarborough. He leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Caitlin Shearsmith, Zachary Payne, Cassidy Payne Firt, Austin Higney, and Skylar Penrod, along with great-grandchildren Sienna, Juliette, and Henley Shearsmith, and Arlen Payne. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Ann Penrod-Kramer and Melodie Cunningham.
The family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Jack’s memory to Nikki Cares, the 501(c)3 charity he launched to support causes close to his heart. Donations can be made via Zelle using the email address AP@nikkibeach.com.
