Held under the honorary founding patronage of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Founding Honorary Patron of Abu Dhabi Festival, and under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), the 22nd edition of Abu Dhabi Festival is held under the inspiring theme, “Abu Dhabi – A World of Harmony.” This year’s Festival continues to build on the success of previous editions, drawing more than 8,500 attendees from around the world to the UAE’s capital to experience Arab World premieres by internationally acclaimed musicians.
Her Excellency Huda Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and Abu Dhabi Festival, said: “The Abu Dhabi Festival programme, held under the theme of its 22nd edition, ‘Abu Dhabi – A World of Harmony,’ reflects the capital’s position as a global meeting place that builds bridges of cultural dialogue and understanding between people and societies. It also embodies the UAE’s Year of Community’s values of social cohesion, coexistence and cultural diversity within a framework of harmony, unity, beauty, and peace.”
H.E. continued: “Through Arab world premiere of major orchestras and internationally acclaimed Japanese artists, the Festival honoured Japan as its guest country of honour, celebrating over fifty years of friendship and cooperation between our two nations.”
“The Abu Dhabi Festival embodies our renewed pledge to stimulate cultural diplomacy efforts, our commitment to advancing human civilisation, and envisioning a bright future for the global arts and cultural landscape. This commitment is reaffirmed by investing in Emirati youth, highlighting the exceptional talents of the next generation, and embracing the spirit of innovation and creativity. Our co-productions go beyond sharing resources; they represent a convergence of renewed thought and a meeting of minds, enabling communication and dialogue between cultures and peoples on the path to building civilisation and shaping the future,” H.E. concluded.
The Festival’s programming continues into the summer with the unveiling of a historic visual arts exhibition – presented by ADMAF in collaboration with the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) – at Manarat Al Saadiyat. Meanwhile, the Festival’s Abroad programme will bring Abu Dhabi to the world with a series of landmark concerts – from London to New York. Additionally, the Festival will host an array of education and community outreach programmes to engage audiences across the region and globally.
The Abu Dhabi Festival 2025 concert series brought a season of unforgettable performances to the capital, from orchestral symphonies and taiko drumming to an all-star ballet and a jazz-filled evening. More than 200 artists from around the world took to the Abu Dhabi stage, presenting a rich blend of musical styles and cultural traditions. With an extraordinary lineup of global talent contributing to its dynamic programme, the Festival delivered a range of immersive experiences aimed at enriching the wider community. The season opened with a tribute to this year’s Country of Honour, Japan, featuring the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra led by the legendary Maestro Yutaka Sado, alongside celebrated tenor Jonathan Tetelman and pianist Kyohei Sorita.
During the Holy Month of Ramadan, the Festival honoured the region’s spiritual heritage with a special digital performance by Sheikh Mahmoud El-Tohamy, who revived the sacred tradition of Inshad (spiritual chanting) – and attracted more than 93,000 viewers on the Festival’s YouTube channel.
The Festival’s ‘Festival in the Park’—one of Abu Dhabi’s largest community-led outdoor celebrations of cultural expression—returned for two days of fun, learning and cross-cultural engagement, to celebrate this year’s Festival Country of Honour: Japan. The festival held at Umm Al Emarat Park welcomed over 2,500 visitors, including families and children, who enjoyed a dynamic programme of traditional performances from both Japan and the UAE, as well as interactive workshops, arts and crafts, and live music. The festival embodied the spirit of the UAE’s ‘Year of Community 2025’, fostering creativity, connection and shared celebration.
The programme continued into April with a series of Arab World premieres and standout performances by global icons. Highlights included piano prodigy Yunchan Lim, violinist Augustin Hadelich, percussionist Kuniko Kato, Japanese Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble, KODO, the piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque, tenor Javier Camarena and the Korean National University of Arts Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Chi-Yong Chung. The All-Star Ballet Gala brought together six of the world’s most acclaimed dancers, while rising stars such as Kian Soltani, Yamen Saadi, Sara Ferrández and Pablo Ferrández added to the rich programming. The concert series in the capital concluded with a special Jazz performance by trumpeter Riley Mulherkar and his band “The Westerlies,” coinciding with UNESCO’s International Jazz Day – held in Abu Dhabi – and paying tribute to the musical legend and friend of the Festival, Quincy Jones.
Beyond the stage, the Festival remained true to its mission of nurturing creativity and fostering education through masterclasses, open rehearsals and outreach initiatives aimed at youth. More than 1,500 students in just one month were engaged through over 10 initiatives that offered direct access to leading global artists and industry experts. For the first time, the Festival also introduced Symphony Storytime – a unique musical storytelling experience for babies and toddlers that combines symphony sounds with literacy, play and exploration.
Looking ahead, Abu Dhabi Festival continues to push the boundaries of cultural engagement through ambitious programming that extends beyond the concert hall and across borders. In May, the Festival deepens its exploration of international artistic dialogue with the opening of the historic exhibition, “Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits – Contemporary Art from Korea, 1960s to Today.” Presented in collaboration with the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), the exhibition will run from 16 May to 30 June 2025 at Manarat Al Saadiyat. This landmark exhibition offers a rare look into the evolution of Korea’s avant-garde contemporary art scene and marks the first large-scale showcase of its kind in the GCC.
The Festival’s global reach continues through its Abroad Programme, which opened this season with the world premiere of Wajdi Mouawad’s Pelléas et Mélisande, at the Opéra Bastille in Paris. Co-produced with the Opéra national de Paris, the landmark performance drew over 22,000 attendees. As the first collaboration between a Middle Eastern institution and the iconic French opera house, it marked a significant milestone in Arab cultural diplomacy and reinforced Abu Dhabi’s presence on the international cultural stage.
Further advancing this vision, the Festival will soon bring a series of groundbreaking concerts to London and New York, placing Emirati talent at the forefront and offering global audiences a window into the UAE’s dynamic cultural landscape. This May, Faraj Abyad will perform a Tribute to Oum Koulthoum which will take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Then, during June, Kensington Palace will host a special performance featuring Emirati artists, presented in collaboration with The Peace and Prosperity Trust.
Through its diverse programming both locally and internationally, Abu Dhabi Festival continues to embody the spirit of ‘A World of Harmony’ and the values of the UAE’s ‘Year of Community,’ while deepening cultural understanding, inspiring future generations, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global capital for arts and culture.
