Coffee specialist Lavazza was on hand at Gulfhost in DWTC to host a competition to find the very best that the region had to offer, in terms of baristas, with a competition to produce the perfect cup of Italian style-coffee. Salim Seruwu, quality control & barista trainer with Lavazza explains the importance of the event
How was the competition held?
We had 22 competitors from across the region before whittling it down to six finalists. The champion won a trip to Turin to receive a diploma from our training centre there. The intention is to grow coffee awareness as well as the espresso culture in the Middle East, ensuring that all the coffee shops have consistent coffee.
How is the espresso market in the Middle East?
It’s a growing market. We’re seeing a lot of competition within cafes and among the consumers who know where to go for the coffee they like. They are asking “Why don’t you make me the best coffee like I got in X, Y or Z?” As a result of the increased standards we are seeing a lot of entrepreneurs entering the market.
