The first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East is nearing, and it promises a boom in business for UAE hotels where hoteliers like Suha Hospitality reporting a 96.9% occupancy rate across four of its properties since the start of November, as football fans flock to the nation due to limited accommodation in neighbouring hosts Qatar.
The UAE has cemented itself as the Gulf’s safest and most popular travel and tourism hub and is set to benefit from the mega sporting event that commences on 20th November with an expected total draw of 1.2 million tourists. But with high accommodation fees and overburdened hotels in Qatar, fans are looking to travel to the UAE for a more leisurely experience. Most hotels, including Suha Hospitality have seen an increase in last-minute bookings and are expecting a 100% occupancy rate closer to the start of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
If you’re a football fanatic looking to visit during the World Cup but prefer to stay in Dubai, here are a few need-to-knows from Anthony Wright, the Area General Manager at Suha Hospitality.
Short-term rentals
With hotels across the Gulf reporting an advanced increase for the World Cup, short-term rentals might be a more suitable option. The demand for short-term rentals has seen an astronomical 65 per cent rise, with many landlords accommodating this need by reducing the lease period of properties. With economical rates across the city, and close proximity to the airport, short-term rentals are enticing for the average tourist and those looking to stay and experience the UAE’s notable lifestyle over a smaller vacation period. These rentals are easily accessible through a plethora of websites and are often dependable for a quick fix.
Long-term rentals
Considering that many World Cup goers would only be attending a few games, they can opt to spend more leisure time in the UAE through longer rentals. At affordable prices and sense of ‘home away from home’, when compared to regular hotels or AirBnbs, long-term rentals are economical and equipped with necessary utilities like washing machines, stoves, and paid electric and air conditioning. These accommodations have a low-cost but a high value over a longer period of time, making it optimal for vacationing families that would want to spend over a few months in the UAE.
Shuttle flights
Perhaps one of the biggest benefits to fans traveling from across the globe are shuttle flights operation to-and-from the UAE to Qatar. Earlier this year, regional airlines announced shuttle flights that would allow fans to watch games in Qatar before returning to the UAE within 24 hours. Fans can benefit from this by saving money on expensive hotel rates in Qatar by flying back to the UAE to stay for the games they are not attending. This greatly adds to the appeal of staying in the UAE, with cheaper hotel prices and a more cosmopolitan lifestyle
Multiple entry visa
Additionally, citizens in the UAE can benefit from a multiple-entry tourist visas to Qatar through their Hayya Card which will now serve as an entry permit to the host country during the tournament period and is mandatory for football fans wishing to attend the matches. The visa costs a mere AED100, valid for 90 days from the date it is issued and can be extended for an additional 90 days. Moreover, citizens of countries that do not need a visa to enter the UAE can come to the Emirates under existing rules.
Early ticket sale numbers have given hotel operators an estimate of the actual demand, which is nothing short of immense with FIFA announcing 2.45 million in ticket sales and 500,000 tickets still available.
This immense gap between room availability in Qatar and the tickets being sold, makes for an incredibly lucrative market for hoteliers but also entices fans to live in Dubai or elsewhere in the United Arab Emirates for a wallet-friendly stay without sacrificing the FIFA World Cup 2022 experience through daily shuttle flights and other fan-favourable facilities in hotspots like JBR where there will be live viewings of the games and special packages on food and drinks.
