The number of hotel rooms under construction is up 43.1% compared to October 2014, with rooms under contract up by 29.1% compared to the same period.
The data, from STR Global, shows there are 781 hotels, totalling 195,705 rooms under contract in the MEA region. Under Contract data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the unconfirmed stage.
The region reported 105,177 rooms in 407 hotels under construction for the month.
Broken down by chain scale, the numbers under contract are:
Upper Upscale – up 30.1% with 58,812 rooms
Upscale – up 21.6% with 42,350 rooms under contract
Luxury – up 14.8% with 29,005 rooms under contract
Unaffiliated – up 14.7% with 28,816 rooms under contract
Upper Midscale – up 10.1% with 19,728 rooms under contract
Under construction:
Upper Upscale – up 32.6% with 34,296 rooms
Unaffiliated – up 21.5% with 22,641 rooms
Upscale – up 17.6% with 18,499 rooms
Luxury – up 15.5% with 16,346 rooms
The Economy segment accounted for the smallest portion of rooms Under Contract, with an increase of 0.4% at 839 rooms and in the under construction sector an increase of 0.4% with 401 rooms.
